Jehovah's Witnesses: is it dishonest to qoute DR. J.R. Mantey as an authority that supports the NWT?

I have been present at meetings when they qoute this guy out of context to support the NWT rendering of John 1:1. But, in fact, Dr. Mantey is deeply offended by this and NEVER condoned the interlinear bible nor the NWT. How do account for this blantant dishonest scholarship? How do you justify being very clearly lied to?
