How do I find the right apartment for me in NYC?

i'm looking to move into nyc (preferably in the greenwich village/ lower west side somewhere).... I need to find out prices, and whats available, and other stuff along those lines. does anyone know any websites, or newspapers (if you live in ny) that I can pick up that will let me know these things? or whatever other advice you have will help also...thanks
