Why would the guy I like say hi to me and when I ask him what's been up, the first thing he mentions is his ex?

He's dealing with a break up so its obviously the main thing on his mind and this doesn't necarily mean that he trust you. As humas when we hurt we can sometimes spills our guts to complete strangers because its all we can think about and we just want someone to share our pain or feel sorry for us.
